Can we celebrate a real hero? sticky icon

Sima Samar

President Obama says he will donate the $ 1.4 million that comes with the Nobel Peace Prize to charity. As usual he’s being vague about the details, so I have a suggestion for him. How about the Shuhada Organization which was founded by Dr Sima Samar, MD, one of the also-rans for this year’s prize.

The Shuhada organization runs hospitals, schools and health clinics for girls and women all over Afghanistan and Pakistan, and Dr Samar literally risked her life many times to get this thing, now in it’s 20th year, off the ground.
...

That is the opening of a piece by Stephanie Gutmann at the Telegraph.co.uk.

The list of "also rans' is quite impressive this year and the fact that 5 women won other prizes is exciting.  But I would love Partizaners to focus some of our energy on women like Dr. Samar.  Women who are succeeding despite the system, despite all the odds being stacked against them.

Elinor Ostrom makes a Record 5 Women for Nobel this year UPDATE sticky icon

Below is the original title but now we have 5 women winning Nobels this year.  This is an Update to the update.

On the left is Muller to your right is Ostrom.

Elinor Ostrom became the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in economics, honored along with fellow American Oliver Williamson on Monday for analyzing economic governance — the rules by which people exercise authority in companies and economic systems.

Ostrom was also the fifth woman to win a Nobel award this year — a record for the prestigious honors.
<snip>
Ostrom, a political scientist at Indiana University, showed how common resources — forests, fisheries, oil fields or grazing lands — can be managed successfully by the people who use them, rather than by governments or private companies.

"What we have ignored is what citizens can do and the importance of real involvement of the people involved — versus just having somebody in Washington ... make a rule," Ostrom said during a brief session with reporters in Bloomington.

Ostrom said it's an honor to be the first woman to win a Nobel Prize in economics — and promised that she won't be the last. She said people discouraged her from seeking a Ph.D. when she applied for graduate school but she loved studying economics.

Herta Müller makes a Record 4 Women for Nobel this year RE-LOADED

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. sticky icon

Coffee in hand, I click on my first website of the day - as usual, the BBC news.  After shaking my head at the top headline, I knew I'd be sharing my reactions (and hoping to hear yours) at Partizane.

It seems President Cicero (Good grief, I'm linking to George Will.  As they say, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.) has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

I guess the only thing that really surprises me about this is the year.  The Nobel committee had this to say about their reasoning.

Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

"It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done," he said.

He specifically mentioned Mr Obama's work to strengthen international institutions and work towards a world free of nuclear arms.
