More Political scare and BS tactics about hackers
The Headline reads: NYPD Computers Targeted by International Hackers
The story is how NY Police Commissioner Ray Kelly says the Police computers are targeted at least 70,000 times a day. But the incredible security they use keeps the hackers at bay.
70,000 That's all?
Virtually every server on Earth is targeted by hacker robots trying to break in. And the standard security software rejects the attacks. The typical message I get from the server is that someone has tried to log in and failed over X times at which point the system automatically locks out the IP address. Of course they have ways to change IP and come again.
That is why I and every geek I know use strong passwords. In my case, very strong. So strong in fact that I don't know my password for this website. I have an encription thingy that remembers for me, as long as it was my finger print it saw a few minutes ago.
But the reason for this post is just to point out another example of fear mongering by a politician. The Internet is very safe if people follow simple rules, but it seems even the feds sometimes can't enforce the rules.
