Iceland Leads World in Gender Equality. US Ranks #31.
Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden and New Zealand 'lead the world in gender equality,' according to the 2009 Global Gender Gap report released by Switzerland's World Economic Forum:
[T]he land of glaciers and puffins, population 319,000, is the most gender egalitarian country on earth, with women having closed 80 percent of the gap with men. Finland (2), Norway (3), Sweden (4) and Denmark (7) are in the top ten too, as is New Zealand (5). You could try harder, Spain (17) and Germany (12) — in 2007 you were in the top ten. And O, Canada: 25. Very sad.
A Guest comment:
Iceland's ranking is so high because the women of Iceland stuck together and went on strike a few years ago. Changes were made.

My mentor and friend, Dr. Estelle Ramey
Estelle was a fantastic person, as protective of men as she was adamant for the recognition of women's rights. She approached the gender discussion with wit and science. She died three years ago but stands as an example of someone who would have been a great choice for any Council leader. Reading some of the comments on blogs, I found that she would be called a dinosaur - sadly many women have bought into the idea that any woman with experience, actions and intelligence is passe.
From the 70's on she influenced many women's lives - certainly mine as I was introduced to her while studying in medical school [not as a med student - not allowed in them there days] taking courses to get a MS. She was an endrocrinologist who told it like it is, I discovered, after I contacted her for some info on the thymus.
I intend to do a series of posts using her words and the words of others who knew her. It seems that few women or men remember much of what the recent past was like and about the women that "were the change". The following is from her obit - note how the attitudes of the DNC have not changed much.
The "Oh, Shit!" Moment
As a woman, I have been told various things by various factions in the feminist movement. One claims that gender is a social construction. This faction, in my opinion, falls into the category of denying reality. In fiercely and falsely asserting that women and men are the same, we open ourselves up to what I call the "Oh, Shit!" moment.
Interview with Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, Part II
The following is Part II of my email interview with the gracious, intelligent, fiery and fabulous feminist, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, after reading her book: "Rumours of Our Progress Have Been Greatly Exaggerated."
