CA Gay Marriage Ban Donors Outed

grlpatriot - Posted on 13 November 2008

gay rights are civil rightsThe fight over marriage equality in California continues as an online blacklist posts personal information on people who donated to support California's Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. Check out the video from CBS 5 in the Bay Area. I have no problem with boycotting businesses that supported Prop 8 and boycotting Utah and the Sundance film festival. The purse is powerful, especially in this economy; however, this "online blacklist" of private citizens crosses the line for me.

As saddened as I am about the passage of the gay marriage bans in California, Arizona, and Florida, I am troubled by "outing" people (and targeting them personally) simply for supporting a cause in a free and democratic society. As a lesbian, I understand all to well the heartbreak these bans cause; however, it is no excuse to target private citizens for participating in a democratic process just because they were against our cause for equality. H8 is H8 regardless where it originates or the circumstances. We are better than this. I would think it would be more productive to create a massive letter writing campaign for these donors that tell our personal stories of love, commitment, and dreams of equality.

The fight for marriage equality isn't over but it can only be won by changing the hearts and minds of our heterosexual family, friends, neighbors, classmates, and co-workers. Our setbacks only make us stronger. Be loud, be proud, but most importantly lead by example!

I can't imagine or try to be in your shoes but I know this country needs more honorable people like you.

Thank you

I think all PUMAs know something about feeling harassed, taunted, shunned, marginalized, and even discriminated against. Being non-heterosexual is similar but more so.

Don't tell anybody.  I love women and if I was a woman I'd be a lesbian too.

from men. I have some straight male friends who I call honorary lesbians. Hampster, you are a friend to women, straight and gay alike, and can be an honorary lesbians if you want. Eye-wink

so please digg it.  Great, short and to the point about values I hope we all hold dear.

But you are right.

(But this brings up an interesting point - what is going to happen to all those small online donations in the age of "outing" them via OpenSecrets.org? Will Obama's warchest dry up?)

to the information being made available to the public, but I am opposed to the intention behind using it and targeting people personally for the purpose of harassing them just for exercising their right to participate in the democratic process. Where the "news" really lies is if hypocrisy or illegal contributions are discovered.

agreed. Smiling

You hang onto your principals even in what must be enormous distress, anger and frustration. That you can do that only highlights that you have the moral high ground while the homophobes that would discriminate against you are just sad little bigots.

That said I don't agree with targeting private citizens either. They have a "right" to be wrong I suppose. I just don't have to like it.

So true, KM. Thanks.
