Hypocrisy On Steroids

Politicians can turn on a dime
They do it most all of the time
They loathe this thing now
But tomorrow, oh wow
They’re doing it now and it’s fine.

I don’t mind politicians being liars and hypocrites as much as I mind them thinking that we are too stupid to know that they’re liars and hypocrites.

I wish for a world in which we have real leaders who are honest, competent, and smart. It would also be nice if they had some integrity. For now we have to make due with what we have. A bunch that lacks all the things I listed above.

Obama promised many times over the campaign season to rid Washington D.C. of all those evil lobbyists. I don't have a problem with that except that there are some very good and worthy people who happen to be lobbyists.

One that comes to mind is Max Cleland. Cleland is registered to lobby for a company whose products are aimed at helping soldiers recover more quickly from battlefield injuries, Tissue Regeneration Technologies. Evil lobbyist? I think not.

So staunchly did Obama distance himself from lobbyists when he was campaigning that he un-invited the former Senator and  badly wounded war hero Max Cleland from appearing with him in Atlanta July 8, 2008. No lobbyists on Obama’s stage you bet. http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0708/Obama_disinvited_lobbyist_Cleland.html

The proclamation was heard throughout the land that there would be no evil lobbyists in the Obama Administration. Except as one Obama supporter was forced to admit, when there was. http://www.usnews.com/blogs/robert-schlesinger/2009/01/22/no-lobbyist-in-the-obama-administration--except-when-there-is-one.html

“Mr. Obama's nominee for deputy secretary of defense, William Lynn, has been a lobbyist for the defense contractor Raytheon, and his nominee for deputy secretary of health and human services, William V. Corr, lobbied for stricter tobacco regulations as an official with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.” Oops.

First nominee, boo hiss. If Mr. Lynn had been a lobbyist for a defense contractor there was certainly an appearance of shenanigan like behavior, maybe even a conflict of interest. Right? But not all lobbyists are created equal.

Max Cleland = good lobbyist.
William V. Corr = good lobbyist (He lobbied for stricter tobacco regulations as an official with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids)

So we were treated right off the bat to the fact that some of Mr. Obama’s purty words were just campaign rhetoric, which he is sure we didn’t take seriously. Surely his being in the Oval Office is enough of a change to satisfy picky people.

Now here we are further down the road and the Democrats, who obviously don’t think we are paying attention, are up to their old tricks. (So are the Republicans but at this point in time they have little power so nobody much cares.)

“Obama’s strict ban on lobbyist contributions (tee-hee) will limit the haul from Thursday night’s fundraising dinner for congressional Democrats”

Surely that is good news you say, goshwoggled that I am not happy as an intoxicated wombat at this news. Ah but that isn’t all the news.

“Organizers have found a way around it: a morning-after event at the same hotel where lobbyists — and their money — will be welcomed with open arms.

Invitations for the $5,000-per-person Issues Conference don’t say it’s an effort to skirt Obama’s lobbying ban, but they walk right up to the edge.”

You would think that after all this time, after watching the bottom-feeding antics of politicians for nearly a half a century I would have run out of outrage by now. Yet somehow, someway these scumbags always manage to outdo themselves one more time.

This riffraff, this trash these unworthy people that have the temerity to think themselves  better than the majority of the American people not only never seem to get tired of treating us like mushrooms they also think we don’t see what they are doing.

And I for one, find that annoying.

Democrats and Republicans say
It’s the other that stands in the way
Of things as they should
Of things if they could
While lobbyists always make hay

And if you think I’m going to apologize for including two very bad limericks in my rant, you’re wrong.

Hey Marge, I love your limericks!  I love your rants, too.  Max Cleland is a true hero who sacrified a great deal in service to this country.  Obama, on the other hand is a fake hero, put up on a pedestal by his minions, who deserves none of the accolades and has never sacrificed anything for this country.  Obama probably didn't want any of the attention to be drawn away from him and given to Cleland.  Maybe just maybe, it made Obama slightly uneasy, or even a little guilty, to have to be in the presence of someone who really deserves the kind of praise that he gets for no reason at all.

I think that the lobbyists who are bringing big money and perks with them, will be welcomed in Obama's administration.  The ones who can't or won't offer these things will not be welcomed.  I will offer a phrase from a Stephen King novel......"SSDD" which means Same Sh*t, Different Day.

I agree with the SSDD too. That about covers what we're seeing.
