The Obama Administration and Moutaintop Mining
Obama Administration and Mountaintop Mining
I cannot find the words to express my heartbreak that this continues under a “Democratic” administration. I cannot find the words to express my loathing of the lies that this Administration told while seeking office and the reality that we now face.
Candidate Obama was against mountaintop removal in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky.
That was then…
President Obama, not so much.
On May 15th the Obama EPA cleared 42 MTR permits, saying that blowing up tops of mountains and dumping the debris into nearby rivers and streams would not have an adverse environmental impact.
And this is now…
I guess this is just another example of a “pol being a pol”. Another example of it being just ducky if a candidate lies to us to get elected and then does a 180. After all they have to get elected to do the job right? And then the minute a butt is planted in the Oval Office for the “first” term every waking moment must be spent working towards the election to a “second” term.
That I’m afraid is politics and life in this United States. Politics trumps all. It trumps honesty, integrity, and even basic decency.
Obama didn’t equivocate about mountain top mining. He didn’t ahh, ahh, ahh about it. " He said the country also needs a forward-thinking energy policy, and he alluded to his disapproval of the coal mining process of mountaintop removal.
"We're tearing up the Appalachian Mountains because of our dependence on fossil fuels," he said, sparking loud applause.
Let’s not forget the applause. Let’s not forget the words. He lied! He didn’t flip-flop, equivocate or parse. He said he was against it and now he isn’t.
How is this in any way acceptable behavior? Are we so jaded that a liar in the White House is all right with us? It’s just a pol being a pol? If so, shame on us for accepting such tawdry behavior in our leaders and for enabling them to act with such a lack of integrity.
What about the new head of the EPA Lisa Jackson? Installed with such fanfare and with such high hopes that with a Democratic Administration the “protection” part of EPA would once again mean something.
There were some who had concerns about her but these concerns were brushed aside because she was after all, a historic choice and the first AA to be head of the EPA. And we have all come to know that being historic is far more important than being competent or honest. Which for all I know, Lisa Jackson may well be. Her action or lack thereof concerning the blowing up of mountaintops leaves me wondering. Historic is all fine and dandy, but a strong “protector” of the environment means a lot more to me. I like folks that “walk the talk”.
It sounded really “hopeful” for the people in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky back in March. The EPA was gonna live up to the “protection” part of it’s name. Or so they said.
But that was then and this is now. Guess “green” isn’t important compared to the “green” from all those coal companies who find blowing up mountains, polluting and destroying the environment cheaper. And this is different from the repulsive Republicans how?

As in the snotty nosed little asses running our country.
Thanks for bringing this up KM. I'll be back to join in the conversation when I'm actually awake.

I read about this yesterday and couldn't believe what I was reading. This is beyond disgraceful. I have come to the conclusion that Obama is really a Republican masquerading as a Democrat.
Good article, Kenosha, and thanks for the links.
This should not surprise any of us. Let's not forget the disdain that Obama displayed toward the people of this region as he attacked them for their gun ownership and their religious practices while at a fund raiser in SF. Yep, he was being a good Chicago Democratic pol as he went from state to state, a great pretender preaching what people wanted to hear with a bought and paid for sycophantic media in his back pocket.
Separate what he says from what he does. This is a man who reads a teleprompter, while others craft his policy, something he is happy to do as long as they stroke his ego.I am sick of hearing about Republican and Democratic labels; look at what people do not at what they say.
The Democratic party has been in control of Congress for some time now and we have a Democratic POTUS. Obama is not a Republican clone, rather he is representative of what the once great party of the people has morphed itself into becoming, a hideous antithesis of what it once was.
reminded me of a recent Gary Trudeau's Doonesbury comic strip where the O-One is conversing with a media consultant [i think]. The O-one complains that he hasn't got an icon like the other presidents. Well Gary, wake up and smell the teleprompter.
My husband told me about it and I just about had an aneurysm.
I really thought there would be some things I'd agree with that Obama would do as President. At least, I thought, he'd probably be okay on the environment. Mountaintop mining is now okay? Is there anything more environmentally devastating than this practice by the coal-mining industry? Poisoning the Appalachian people and destroying their beautiful home is fine, because they're poor and white and didn't vote for him?
This man is a true sociopath. No conscience and no engagement. He just really, REALLY does not care about much of anything except getting and keeping his power as President.
I shudder to think what he will do next.
MTR is horribly destructive to the local environment and ecosystem but apparently, O doesn't see it that way. Sure, it's a good, safe, cost effective way to harvest coal and stuff but at what price?
to think what the Obama Administration will do next.
If you cannot trust a "Democratic" Administration to be rock solid environmentalists where do you go?
I was so comfy in my partisan beliefs that the evil Republicans were destroying the environment out of their greed and that the wondrous Democrats would save the planet.
Now what? Greed and expediency rules and the left is strangely silent?
Where the hell is Al Gore? Where are all those that told us that Obama was the savior of our environment? Guess that taking over the automotive industry and forcing them to build green cars is the extent of it.
I didn't think that there was any way that I could loathe Obama and his followers more than I all ready did. Learning that I can and I do, on a nearly daily basis.
A Dishonest/Biased Media Is A Crime Against Democracy!
A former Obama supporter, the columnist Ted Rall, now says this: "I won’t follow a terrible leader just because I voted for him. Obama has revealed himself. He is a monster, and he should remove himself from power."
I truly recommend this column: "It’s increasingly evident that Obama should resign" at: http://tinyurl.com/nu8d64
Typical of an unreconstructed Bot is this defense of Obama's broken campaign promises and pledges (in the comment section below the column) . . .

Ted,
I disagree with you. What Obama is doing now is facing the real world. Words on campaign trails mean little once one reads the daily threat level while having a cup of coffee in the Oval Office. Obama realizes what a real threat these terrorists are to the US.

Of course, these Obamabots never cut Hillary any slack for KNOWING what Obama has had to learn -- that a president has to deal with the complications and consequences of his decisions and policies, so she was not as blithe to lie to the American people about what she would do as president.
The Obama supporters BELIEVED Obama's false promises and pledges and are now, in most sickening ways, excusing Obama for breaking those promises and pledges
