Hawaii’s Civil Union Bill Stalled For Now sticky icon

Do you remember way back (in the 90's) when Hawaii was a gay marriage proving ground? Ok, yeah I know, we had disappointing set backs. How much things change in a decade. The Aloha State is back on the battlefield with a bill establishing civil unions. A Senate committee met on Tuesday, February 24 to debate a bill approving civil unions that passed earlier this month in the House. The meeting ended in a 3-3 vote tie, stalling the measure in committee for now but the bill might make it to a full floor vote.

North Dakota House Grants Fertilized Eggs Human Status sticky icon

Yes, you read that right. I'll let the story speak for itself.

A measure approved by the North Dakota House gives a fertilized human egg the legal rights of a human being, a step that would essentially ban abortion in the state. The bill is a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that extended abortion rights nationwide, supporters of the legislation said. (emphasis added)
...
The bill declares that "any organism with the genome of homo sapiens" is a person protected by rights granted by the North Dakota Constitution and state laws.

I guess we know where North Dakota stands on harvesting stem cells from embryos. I await Obama's comments on this vote. Any thoughts on what he'll say?

Help Stop Florida Legislators From District-Rigging sticky icon

I received the following email from the ACLU of Florida regarding the Fair Districts Florida campaign to stop district-rigging. Help give voters a real voice in choosing their representatives. Only Florida residents registered to vote in the state can sign the petitions. If you know someone in Florida, please pass this along.

Dear grlpatriot,

Last week we told you about our work with the Fair Districts Florida Coalition. We are building momentum and working toward creating fair districts in Florida but we still need your help to create constitutionally mandated standards that will require fairness, not partisanship, in the reapportionment process that would stop members of the Legislature from rigging the process to benefit themselves.

Standing Up For Gay Rights Won't Make You Popular sticky icon

I moved to Florida about 15 months ago and only recently started reading our local newspaper, Florida Today. I'm proud of our paper. The editorial staff weighed in on the recent gay adoption ruling and fully supports ending the Florida ban on gay adoptions in a strongly worded editorial. Here are a few snips:

Is a “tool bag” a “tote” if a woman carries it? sticky icon

Tool bag lost in spaceThe Associated Press headline reads, Astronaut outside space station loses tool bag. However, a better title for the article would have been, Helpless women losses tote in space. I first saw this story reported in Florida Today, my local paper. Florida Today provided a non-biased tag line and article title, and left out all the negative gender stereotyping when reporting on the incident.

Red Hot & Blue Wednesday Roundup for 11/20/08 sticky icon

Life happens and sometimes you just have to do a Wednesday news roundup on Thursday.

1. Corrupt Republican Sen. Ted Stevens R-Alaska concedes his US Senate seat to challenger Democrat Mayor Mark Begich. Democrats are within striking distance of 60 seat supermajority in the US Senate if they win the recount in Minnosota and run-off in Georgia.

CA Gay Marriage Ban Donors Outed sticky icon

gay rights are civil rightsThe fight over marriage equality in California continues as an online blacklist posts personal information on people who donated to support California's Proposition 8 banning same-sex marriage. Check out the video from CBS 5 in the Bay Area. I have no problem with boycotting businesses that supported Prop 8 and boycotting Utah and the Sundance film festival.

Obama Infomercial Fact Check sticky icon

Barack Obama has come under some scrutiny after Obama For America aired a 30 minute product infomercial on Wednesday, Oct 29. Associated Press writer, Calvin Woodward, caught just some of the misleading or false claims made by Obama in the informercial:

Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was less than upfront in his half-hour commercial Wednesday night about the costs of his programs and the crushing budget pressures he would face in office. Obama's assertion that "I've offered spending cuts above and beyond" the expense of his promises is accepted only by his partisans. His vow to save money by "eliminating programs that don't work" masks his failure throughout the campaign to specify what those programs are — beyond the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Red Hot & Blue Wednesday Roundup for 10/29/08 sticky icon

1. The liberal group Moveon.org offers a "fun" voter harassment video service. From the convenience of your computer you can harass, coerce, even terrify anyone on your email list with a personalized "you better vote for Obama or else" video message. The video delivery site, CNNBC site says the following:

Customize Videos For Yourself And Your Friends

This news video is a fun, memorable way to show your friends what might happen if any of us don't vote. Customize it for your friends—and feel free to send yourself one, too. And don't worry—after we send out the link to the video, we won't email your friends again. And we'll never sell or distribute your email address or your friends' email addresses.

I (PUMA) Voted (McCain/Palin) for Hillary 2012! sticky icon

Florida started early voting on October 20 for the general election match up between McCain and Obama (the Lord of lies, flip floppery, voter fraud, caucus fraud, race-baiting, and dirty politics). Traditionally, I've voted on election day, November 4, for all the Democrats, even the weakest of Dems. Why? Because I've been a loyal and unquestioning Democrat for 20 years. But this year, I've had enough with the Obamacrats and their shenanigans. No more. I'm ready for change. I'm ready for leadership that this country needs, wants, and deserves.

On Friday, October 24, 2008, I cast my PUMA vote in the great swing state of Florida for McCain/Palin 2008 and Hillary Clinton 2012.

Action: Democrats For Principle Before Party Fundraising Match sticky icon

Hey, friend, can you spare some change before 8PM tonight? I know money is tight, but these are worthy causes that could use your $5, $10, or whatever donation.

From blogger, Regency:

A favor folks: can you help spread the word about a rapid fire match offer just made to Democrats For Principle Before Party (spreading the word is more important for this than even donating, because the deadline is 8 pm tonight). Details about the match are at their website.

Here’s a bit of the text from that post:

PA Congressmen, Murtha, Clarifies 'Racist' Remark, Calls Constituents 'Redneck' sticky icon

You just can't make this stuff up. After apologizing for calling his constituents "racist" last week, Pennsylvania congressman, John Murtha, clarified his remarks in another interview by saying that the good people in western Pennsylvania are 'redneck' because he thinks that if they don't support Obama it's because (shhh, he's black).

"What I mean is there's still folks that have a problem voting for someone because they are black," Murtha said. Murtha said the history of southwestern Pennsylvania is teeming with racism. "This whole area, years ago, was really redneck," he told WTAE-TV Pittsburgh.

FL Girl Called 'Racist' for Wearing pro-Palin T-shirt sticky icon

Read my lips people: S-T-O-P with the faux charges of racism; children are now getting on the faux outrage bandwagon. MyFox Orlando has the story:

PA Congressman, Murtha, Calls Constituents 'Racist' sticky icon

John Murtha Double take? Yeah, I did that too when I first heard about it. On Wednesday, former Hillary Clinton supporter and Pennsylvania Congressman, John Murtha had this to say about the cold shoulder that his constituents in western Pennsylvania are giving Obama:

Action: Vote NO On Florida's Amendment 2 sticky icon

Prejudice against lesbians and gays hurts everyone. States that pass discriminatory, so-called marriage protection amendments actually hurt all domestic partners, straight and gay. In Florida, millions of seniors will be seriously impacted in addition to other domestic partners, young and old alike. Florida law already bans same-sex marriage. Amendment 2 goes too far to strip away rights for all unmarried domestic partners. For more information on Florida's Amendment 2, check out VoteNoOn2.

Here's more about VoteNoOn2 from their website:

LA Chapter NOW President, Mandall, 'proud to support Sarah Palin' sticky icon

"This is what a feminist looks like," said Shelly Mandell, Los Angeles NOW chapter president, in her introduction of Gov. Sarah Palin at a campaign rally in California over the weekend. Mandell endorsed Palin as "an individual and a women's rights activist" and not as a representative of NOW. ABC's, Jake Tapper, has portions of the transcript and a Youtube vid so here's the story via Tapper:

Shelly Mandell, the president of the Los Angeles chapter of the National Organization for Women introduced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin over the weekend in California, speaking not on behalf of NOW but "as an individual, as a woman's rights activist for 30 years who has worked for all those years to see this day."

Nuts and Bolts: Obama, Acorn, and Election Fraud sticky icon

The vigilant Just Say No Deal (JSND) Coalition is keeping a watchful eye on ACORN. In a handy chart, the JSND editors have traced the nuts back to Obama's community organizing days, connected the dots to Obama's staffers and radical associates that form his new Democratic party, and linked to the entrenched interests within the Democratic Party that sheltered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, causing the economic crisis. The troubling news about ACORN keeps rolling in with little mainstream media Obamedia scrutiny. Reacting to "recent revelations of ACORN registering dead, underage, and fictitious voters," JSND released a statement on Monday, October 6th, saying:

Action: Conflict of Interest for VP Debate Moderator, Gwen Ifill (Updated 2x) sticky icon

PBS’s Gwen Ifill has a pro-Obama book scheduled for release on inauguration day, January 20, 2009. Gwen IfillShe has been openly in support of Obama and has an obvious financial interest in Biden doing well in the debate and Obama winning the election. The McCain campaign did not know about Ifill's book and bias toward Obama. (Is anyone surprised about the media bias toward Obama at this point?)

ACLU Hosts Tele-Town Hall on Anti-Marriage Equailty FL Amendment 2

If you live in Florida, and believe in domestic partner rights for straight and same sex couples, participate in the tele-town hall on Tuesday, October 14 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM (ET) to help defeat Florida's Amendment 2.

You'll need to register to join the call.  Here is an email I got from the ACLU with the details.

Dear _____,

We are excited to bring ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero and ACLU of Florida Executive Director Howard Simon to your living room this coming Tuesday, October 14 from 6:30PM to 7:30PM (ET). Thanks to the modern marvels of technology you can attend our first-ever "Tele-Town Hall Meeting" in the comfort of your own home.

The ACLU-sponsored town hall will cover proposed Amendment 2, the so-called "Marriage Amendment," its potential ramifications for Floridians and the national landscape with respect to other states that have passed similar laws and amendments.

Virgina Teachers Push Obama During School Hours (Updated 2x)

Regardless of who you support for president, I think we can all agree that we should keep partisan politics out of the schools. Our schools are NOT political parties or political organizations. Our schools are supposed to be safe, harassment free institutions of learning. In case you didn't get the memo, the Virgina Teacher's Union sponsored an "Obama Blue Day" on Tuesday, September 30. Here's the story:
