My Clothes are Rags

The Confluence - Wed, 05/08/2013 - 10:29am

I have to be examined for holes before I leave the house. I REALLY need to go shopping but, I’m stumped:

Where can we find fair trade clothes? And can we assume that clothes made in the US include living wages for the makers? What about the cloth? How can we find where the cloth is made and if it’s made with living wage labor?

So with all those questions in mind, where is a not-rich person of conscience supposed to buy clothes.

Black Comedy: A type of humor/satire poking fun at something usually seen as serious or taboo. It often utilizes shock value to get laughs and common themes include death, violence, insanity, racism and other things that are usually not seen as funny. It is commonly mistaken with African-American comedy because of the name, but not necessarily related.

Chinese Workers Hail Romney’s Record as Job Creator

Andy Borowitz - Sat, 07/14/2012 - 2:47pm

BEIJING (The Borowitz Report) – After a brutal week in which he was booed by the NAACP and grilled by the media, Republican presidential choice Mitt Romney got some support from an unlikely place today: Beijing.

Manufacturing workers from across China flooded downtown Beijing to show their gratitude for Mr. Romney’s robust record of job creation in China while at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital.

While Mr. Romney’s feats of outsourcing have taken a political toll at home, they have made him a national hero in China, according to workers like Qiu Huang, who attended the rally.

“I owe my job to Mitt Romney, and so do many of my friends and family members,” he said.  “His record as a job creator, in China at least, is second to none.”

Mr. Qiu said that if Mr. Romney ran for President of China, “he’d win in a landslide – he wouldn’t even need those billionaire brothers to buy ads for him.”

But the Chinese worker was surprised to learn that Mr. Romney had spent the better part of the week denying that he still worked at Bain during the company’s frenzy of outsourcing jobs to China.

“Why would you deny doing a great thing like that?” he asked. “That would be like denying you gave people healthcare.”  Get a free subscription to the Borowitz Report here.

A Note from Mitt Romney’s Doctor

Andy Borowitz - Thu, 07/12/2012 - 2:07pm

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) – Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney today released this doctor’s note from his longtime physician, Dr. Hamilton Tennace.

To Whom It May Concern:

I have been Willard Mitt Romney’s personal physician for the past thirty-two years.  In that capacity, I believe I am uniquely qualified to address the issue of whether Mr. Romney left his post at Bain Capital in 1999, as he has said he did, or in 2002, as actual facts seem to suggest.

I treated Mr. Romney throughout his tenure at Bain.  During those years, I found him to be healthy, fit, and tan, but not dangerously so.  From a health standpoint, those years were uneventful for Mr. Romney, with one notable exception.

In 1999 I received an urgent call from Bain headquarters indicating that Mr. Romney had suffered a serious accident.  Once I arrived on the scene, I learned that Mr. Romney had participated in a “going away party” to celebrate the end of his tenure at Bain and that he had been hit in the forehead with an exploding champagne cork.  After he spent several days in the hospital for observation, it became clear to me that Mr. Romney was suffering from symptoms consistent with head trauma, including severe memory loss.  For example, he could not remember several key episodes from his youth, including the time he pinned a gay student to the ground and cut off his hair.

After I advised his partners at Bain that Mr. Romney’s recovery from this head trauma could be difficult and prolonged, they decided to keep him on as chief executive at Bain so that he could benefit from the company’s health coverage.  It was decided that he would take a leave of absence from his duties at Bain to do something less demanding, and so he signed on to run the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

When his duties at the Olympics were complete, Mr. Romney submitted to a full physical at the request of his partners to Bain to see if he was finally ready to make his much-delayed exit from the firm.  He passed most of the cognitive tests with flying colors; he could remember the name of his wife and all of his sons, which in his case was an impressive feat.  Only one question made him stumble.  When I asked him what year it was, instead of 2002 he replied, “1999.”

To be candid, I did not think much of his error at the time, although I now see it as a symptom of the chronic memory loss that persisted once he became Governor of Massachusetts.  For example, after examining Gov. Romney just after his greatest legislative achievement, Massachusetts’ healthcare law, he had no memory of having any role in it.  In subsequent appointments, Mr. Romney has been unable to remember other facts one might deem important, such as where he put all his money and what file drawer contains his tax returns.

In closing, it is my medical opinion that Mr. Romney’s forgetfulness about when he departed Bain, as well as his vagueness on any number of other subjects, stem from that original head injury he suffered in 1999.  Having said that, I do not believe that Mr. Romney’s bouts of amnesia should in any way prevent him from having a full, active public life.  In running for the Presidency, they may even be an advantage.

Sincerely,

Dr. Hamilton Tennace, M.D.

My Finances

Andy Borowitz - Wed, 07/11/2012 - 9:04pm

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) – Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney today released this letter to the American people:

Dear American Person:

As many of you know, in recent days my opponent has spread the rumors that 1.) I have refused to make my tax returns public and 2.) I have hidden my money in bank accounts in Switzerland and the Caymans.  These two rumors, while true, have made me look very bad.  So I thought I would take this opportunity to explain my finances in terms even a poor person could understand.

Let’s say you met the love of your life, and you wrote her a series of passionate love letters.  In these letters, you told her how you intended to protect her, cherish her, and always keep her safe.  And then let’s say somebody went and told you that you had to make those love letters available for the world to see.  If you’re even half the man I am, you’d say, “Heck no.”

Well, in my case, the love of my life is my money.  (If you don’t believe me, ask Ann.)  And my tax returns are like my love letters to my money, detailing the lengths to which I’ll go to keep my precious money from being taken away from me.  If you think I should make those love letters public, then I’m sorry, my friend, but you don’t believe in love.

Now, let’s say you asked the love of your life to marry you, and you’re fortunate enough that she said “yes.”  Should someone be able to force you to spend your honeymoon in a ratty room at some Motel 6, where God knows what crackheads and whores slept before you?  Or should you be allowed to take your bride to a five-star Swiss chateau, perhaps, or an exclusive beach on Grand Cayman?  I think you can see where I’m going with this.

In conclusion: if refusing to release my tax returns and having foreign bank accounts is wrong, I don’t want to be right.  I did it all for love.  And as your President, I promise I will never, ever come between you and the thing you love.  Unless you’re gay.  (Laughing Out Loud.)

Vote for Me,

Mitt Romney

10 inch saw blade

Alegre's Corner Latest - Wed, 01/11/2012 - 6:19am

Choosing a 10 Inch Wet Tile Saw
"The Right Tool for the Right Job"

Saw Blade 10
Most 10 inch wet tile saws fall into the categories of home improvement, remodeling, and professional construction. However, homeowners and rock collectors may find this tool very useful as well. It provides a professional look for the do-it-yourselfer and can cut tiles in situations where nippers are difficult to use. These clean cuts, from the wet tile saw, minimize breakage of tiles and can save you money in the long run. Although tile nippers and cutters are less expensive, the risk of breaking tiles is greater. If you choose not to buy a wet tile saw, then consider renting one, as you will likely save money.

Saw Blade 10

Ten inch tile saws typically have more than 1 1/2 horsepower and are mostly built with tough, non-corrosive materials. They also weigh approximately 60-130 pounds, depending upon the various features and type of stand that they come with. These factors make the 10 inch saw durable and dependable.

These saws are versatile and have the ability to cut ceramic and porcelain tiles, but also stone, marble, granite, masonry, and even glass depending upon the blade which is used. Not only can these saws cut different materials but also the larger sizes of tiles. A smaller saw just can't match up to the cutting ability of these saws and the range of material that they can handle.

Wet tile saws also minimize the harmful dust particles that become airborne with dry cutting blades. For the do-it-yourselfer, who will remodel their home, this is a helpful and useful feature. It decreases the dust throughout the home thus minimizing mess and the potential aggravation of allergies.

The following categories should be the things that you consider when purchasing a 10 inch wet tile saw.

1. Horse Power (HP) - Most 10 inch saws will have 1.5 HP which is more than adequate for cutting all of the typical materials.

2. Blade Tilt - This is used for beveling the material being cut. Some saws make it easy to cut 22 1/2 and 45 degree cuts. Others offer jigs to make these cuts.

3. Blade RPM's - RPM's range from 2700 to about 4200. More is not necessarily better. 3600 RPM's seems to be about the average for the saws researched for this article.

4. Plunge and Plunge Capacity - Most of these 10 inch wet tile saws have a plunge feature that is very handy when you are trying to make cuts for outlets or registers. Keep in mind the material that you will be cutting and its thickness. The plunge capacity should be about 3' to 3 3/4" for most of the thicker materials like masonry.

5. Rip/Diagonal Cutting Capacity - How long of a cut can you make? Expect 20-24" lengths for straight cuts and you can cut an 18 inch tile on the diagonal with the majority of these saws.

6. Size and weight - This is a category where some of the companies begin to stand out more than others. These saws get heavy fast with many of their weights up around 100 pounds. Some, however, like the DeWalt D24000(s) weighs in at 69 pounds. This makes it easier to transport from site to site or to get it out of storage. Size can also be a factor. The typical dimensions of these saws are around 36"x26".

7. Stands - Stands are another category where manufactures have tried to stand out. Some are simple, folding stands. Others are more intricate, like the Husqvarna Tilematic. It has a patented, adjustable stand with wheels and a spring assist for ease of adjustments. Look for the wheels with these saws or if they have the capability of adding wheels. Especially if you plan on moving this saw around from room to room.

8. Integrated Features - Rails that are integrated into the saw tend to be more accurate and stable. Miter features are often built in as well since this is a cut used often.

9. Lockable Shaft - Although this is not a necessity, it is a convenience to make the saw blade changes easier, especially if you are switching back and forth between profile blades.

10. Lights and Laser Guides - Only one saw researched (Lackmond) had these features, and in this humble author's opinion, all should have these devices. An added LED light can illuminate the work area and with a laser guide you can ensure an accurate cut and safety.

11. Water Trays, Tanks, Pumps, & Nozzles - These are an entire system in themselves and is another area that manufactures strike out on their own to come up with something inventive. DeWalt & MK Diamond have their own types of water systems that help to keep the over spray to a minimum. However, If you put aside these enhanced features, the most important factor is making sure that the wet tile saw blade stays wet. These blades cut through friction and to make them last you need to keep them cool. Most of the saws do a good job at keeping the blade wet. Also keep in mind the placement of the pumps. You want water free of any debris. Some systems recycle the water placing the pumps at risk of picking up the debris in the water trays.

Whether you are a contractor or a homeowner, there is a lot to think about when investing in a 10 inch saw blade. Your informed decision will make you happy in the years to come as you use your purchase over and over again.

Don't forget your eye protection!

All Life Valued? Not ‘That’ Much

Herlocaust - Fri, 10/22/2010 - 6:28pm

The GLBT has every right to demand to be Equally Valued, Respected & Protected. Don't You?

God, Rescue Our Lives from those who are trying to save their own souls…

Would the Christian, “morally” conservative community please tell us what to say to all human beings, who are intent upon denying any and all Women and Girls the right to live their lives, free from the constant threat of sexual assault?

We are desperately seeking an answer, so we will know precisely what to say to YOUyou, who are intent upon denying any and all Gay, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual and Transgendered human beings the right to live their lives, free from the constant threat of sexual persecution.

How many excuses can human beings, within even the most “civil” of societies, come up with in order to justify violating the humanity of certain others?

How many ways can human beings in any society incite, commit and condone acts of hate, violence and abuse against individuals of a particular group or class within those societies, by minimizing, diminishing and disregarding their right to total equality?

How many ways? Just ask Women’s Rights Activists and the GLBT Community. They can tell you the answer, from decades of fighting for real equality and protection under Human Rights’ laws.

Basically, what they are really up against is all of the excuses their representatives throw at them for not only being the sexist, bigoted, discriminatory human beings that most of them are, but for being so protective of their like-minded supporters.

One would have to be intentionally blind and deaf not to recognize that there are as many excuses for denying, delaying  and denigrating our human right to total equality, as there are political promises that, ‘Real change is on the way, if you will only vote for me and/or our party because, our Equal Rights’ Values and Voting Records speak for themselves.’

Yes-in-dee-dee-they-sure-do.

And so it is. As one’s humanity is the only qualifier for one’s right to Equal Human Rights – this is exactly why the humanity of both Women and GLBT is still getting all of the good ole’ fashion bigoted and hate-filled beatings.

Apparently, according to all religions, “GOD” commanded that Women and Homosexuals were never to have any rights, much less be equal to  heterosexual men whether anyone believes in HIM or not!

And, that Old – Blind, Bigoted, Sexist-Misogynistic – Hate-Filled-Religion, just won’t die!

What’s the worst that could happen if Women and the GLBT actually end up achieving total equality? The way things keep going, we could all end up dead?

Poll: Americans say religious messages fuel negative views of gays

By Nicole Neroulias | Religious News Service | Oct 21, 2010

(RNS) Most Americans believe messages about homosexuality coming from religious institutions contribute to negative views of gays and lesbians, and higher rates of suicide among gay youths, a new poll reports.

:snip:

“There is a growing awareness and understanding about the harm that is caused when society places a religious or moral stamp of disapproval on the lives of gay and lesbian individuals, especially youths.”  Read the article here…

And, who said “Politics and Religion don’t mix”? Certainly not the Catholic Bishops and Bart Stupak, when it comes to exercising control over all Women’s Reproductive Rights

Executive Order On Abortion Announced By White House

Nancy Northup, president of the Center for Reproductive Rights, said it was “unacceptable that a pro-choice president has put his imprimatur on a highly restrictive and unjust anti-choice measure.”

Say that Bigotry ain’t so, Godly Joe!

Or, certainly not, when it comes to a GOP Candidate, Joe Miller, (who’s backed by the Tea Party) putting an Anti-Gay adviser on his payroll? Nah.

Joe Miller’s Extreme Anti-Gay Adviser

By David Corn | Fri Oct. 22, 2010 3:00 AM PDT

One of the consultants on the the tea party-backed candidate’s payroll heads a group that’s so anti-gay it blasted Rush Limbaugh for hobnobbing with Elton John.

Joe Miller, the Sarah Palin-endorsed, tea party-backed GOP Senate candidate in Alaska, hasn’t campaigned much on his opposition to gay rights. In a July letter to Alaskan voters, he noted that “the traditional Christian view” is that “homosexuality is a sin, and therefore immoral.” He added, though, that the “central issue of the campaign” has been the federal debt and government spending. But Miller did place on his campaign payroll a self-described “Christian educator” who leads a religious right organization so virulently anti-gay that it denounced Rush Limbaugh for hobnobbing with Elton John.”  Read the Article here…

And, certainly not when it comes to the Obama – “I’m all for ending DADT” — if I can work it out with my conflicting bigoted, discriminatory, religiously-based position on marriage being between a man and a woman thing — Administration…

Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ Temporarily Upheld By Appeals Court

By: LISA LEFF | 10/20/10 10:46 PM |

“SAN FRANCISCO — A federal appeals court on Wednesday temporarily granted the U.S. government’s request for a freeze on a judge’s order requiring the military to allow openly gay troops.”  Read the Article here…

You, the moral religious “We’re Right” seem to so easily uphold the rights of all “sinners,” whether they have confessed to all of their sins or not. Have you ever even questioned the “right” of a woman-beater, rapist, or “backsliding” divorced pastor or congregate to marry?

You even accept the rights of non-religious men and women to be  married – or not – without denying either of them the legal rights and benefits of marriage, even under “common law”.

You do not deny them their right to have their rights. Why? Because they have those rights, despite how “immoral” or “unnatural” you or others believe them to be living their lives.

Yet, there are millions of human beings who are devout followers of religious faith, as there are those who are not followers, who do not have those same rights. Why? Not because they are different in every aspect from other human beings, making them unqualified for the rights of all other human beings. They are denied equal rights under law for one reason alone; either the object of their human capacity for love, devotion and commitment is another human being of the same gender or, they have an innate gender identity, different than the biological identity of which they were born.

Why must they remind you – time and time again – of what they are and who you are not? They are human beings deserved of the same human rights afforded you. You are not God, nor were  you commanded to play God. Are you the original architects of the human genome, defining the natural from the “unnatural”? Not hardly.

Your judgments upon which lives shall be valued and equally protected as yours, and which lives shall be denied rights equal to yours and persecuted unto death, are both deplorable and inhumane.

This, coming from those who demand the freedom, rights and protection under law to profess and even publicly identify themselves as both “a Bride of Christ” and the husband or wife of a Harry or a Mary?

It is unfathomable that those possessing such a belief  have the audacity to fight against the equal freedoms, rights and protection under law of the marriage between a Larry and Harry or a Mary and  Sherry!

So, on behalf of those that refuse to uphold the rights of others, unlike they uphold the rights of those they deem to be acceptable to them, we say to the GLBT Community:

“Your Life Is Valuable and Equal to All. Your Human Rights Belong to No Man!”
